Either way, I like it...
Every weekend getaway seems to pass with a rapid speed. The Memorial weekend Santa Barbara escape was not an exception. The pool, the parties, the beach, the basketball, the drinks, and the constant motion made me feel as though I was moving at the speed of light from one side of the city to the other, but once back in the hotel room, one glimpse of the Formula 1 race on SPEED network and I felt as though the world had stopped moving.
To tell you the truth I have neither been a fan of Formula 1 nor have I ever cared to. When I voiced this opinion in the hotel room, my friend sharply replied that this is not an American sport that’s why I never cared for it.
I did not even consider it to be a sport.
Regardless of whether I thought bunch of tiny cars racing was a sport or not, my nosy curiosity made me sit down with a few other people who were glued to the screen and witness an incredible action.
The tiny little cars were racing fast! I am not writing fast as in going 100 mph on the 101 Freeway. The speed that I was witnessing was almost unimaginable. The cars were going on average 200 mph.
Watching the cars race I began asking questions to my friends who to my surprise knew more about this sport than I could or would ever imagine.
As it turns out Formula 1 is the fastest race in the world. In addition, it is the most expensive sport in the world.
There are 11 teams; each team is given two cars. Ferrari is the most successful and endorsing Formula 1 team. The teams all travel throughout the world each season for the races. Each race has individual winners who get trophies for the first three spots.
The cars cost millions of dollars. To buy just the helmet that is similar to the one worn by the athletes driving their cars will cost you nearly 500 dollars.
Moreover, the drivers have perks like no other. Aside from receiving their contract salaries which tend to go over the hundred million dollar mark, the winning drivers are given special gifts from the teams they are representing.
The handsome Fernando Alonso driving McLaren Mercedes crossed the finish line first this weekend in Monoco. Apparently, his team was so proud of Alonso that it decided to give Alonso a model car made out of a diamond. Mercedes was quiet successful this weekend, Lewis Hamilton from Britain drove in second. He was followed by Felipe Massa who drove in a Ferrari. Massa and his Ferrari had won the two previous events held in Bahrain and Spain.
The Formula 1 races are one of the most famous races in the world. Their sponsors have broken all records in endorsement. The popularity of it in the United States is fairly little, however, there is one race on the schedule that will take place in the States.
On June 17 the Formula 1 race will take place in Indianapolis. And I don’t know if it’s my incredible need for speed or my major curiosity about this practically non-existing sport, but I am going to do all that I can to witness this event.
